Young Dancer Apprenticeship Program

The BBC's Young Dancer Apprenticeship Program is a fanstastic oppurtunity for aspiring dancers to fully develop their potential and the skills necessary for a professional or pre-professional dance career.

Why Become and Apprentice?

Selection for most ballet and other dance companies is highly competitive. Dancers must be not only highly skilled, but must also be able to stand out in performance settings. These are learned skills that are often difficult to fully master without additional effort and opportunity. For this reason, many otherwise talented individuals never reach their goals as dancers.

The Young Dancer Program helps address this problem by allowing motivated young dancers to apprentice with Borderlands Ballet. Exposure to a Company ethos and training program will often provide that extra push to take a young dancer to the next level.

What Is Involved in an Apprenticeship?

Apprentices are not members of the BBC. Nevertheless, apprentices are fully integrated into the training and routine of the Company. More specifically:

  • All apprentices are scholarshipped to take Company class

  • On a competitive basis, apprentices will understudy parts being performed by Company members and will fill in as needed.

  • On a competitive basis, apprentices will be selected to perform with the BBC.

  • At the discretion of the Artistic Director, apprentices may be promoted to Company members if their performance and skill level warrants this recognition (assuming they meet the age requirements for the Company).

How Do I Become an Apprentice?

Admittance to the Young Dancer Apprenticeship Program is by audition only. Auditions will be held once per year in conjunction with auditions for the BBC.

To be eligible for the program, dancers must be between the ages of 15 and 18. Dancers who are 14 will be considered for the program if they turn 15 by December of the year in which the audition occurs.

All dancers who audition for the BBC and who satisfy the age requirements for the Young Dancer Apprenticeship Program will automatically be considered.
